Le origini si sfumano nella leggenda secondo la quale il castello sarebbe stato costruito a partire dal 1272, in seguito alla distruzione del castello di Fornoli, situato nella collina antistante verso settentrione.
Il complesso è situato a 420 s.l.m. ed a 2 chilometri da Roccastrada. Dal castello si può vedere tutta la vallata sottostante ed il mare. La roccia con cui fu costruito è chiamata "trachite" ed è una tipica roccia vulcanica con cui sono stati costruiti molte borghi, monasteri e castelli della zona.
Durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale il castello fu pesantemente danneggiato. Il padre della signora Iolanda (l'attuale proprietaria dei due appartamenti che vengono affittati) lo acquistò ed incominciò il lungo e faticoso compito di ristrutturazione.
Alla morte del padre il castello passò in proprietà ai suoi 6 figli che attualmente vi abitano. Iolanda ed il marito si sono riservati un piccolo bilocale che non usano sempre: preferiscono che siano gli ospiti a godere degli appartamenti più grandi e ad apprezzare le sensazioni che solo un castello così particolare può trasmettere.

La Castellana Una volta oltrepassato l'arco dell'ingresso del castello e procedendo per pochi passi in salita lungo la piazza interamente piastrellata in cotto, sulla sinistra incontriamo l'ingresso dell'appartamento più grande. E' caratterizzato da un ampio soggiorno con cucina all'americana, un divano letto ed un grande camino (tanto grande che si può stare seduti sotto la cappa vicino al fuoco senza bruciarsi). Sul lato sinistro del soggiorno sono state mantenute intatte le feritoie da cui nel Medio Evo i soldati difendevano la porta d'ingresso del castello. Un'altra feritoia da difesa si trova lungo il corridoio, a destra del soggiorno, che conduce al reparto notte ad al bagno con doccia. Anche nel bagno è presente un "pezzo di storia": il figlio della signora Iolanda, durante i lavori di restauro, trovò un antico lavandino scolpito su una roccia e decise di continuare ad usarlo. Il reparto notte si compone di una camera matrimoniale e di una camerina con due letti singoli. Ciascuna camera ha una porta-finestra con zanzariera che dà sulla piazza del castello.
Per gli ospiti de "La Castellana" vi è la possibilità di far colazione all'aperto: vicino al vecchio forno, dove molti anni fa Iolanda e sua madre preparavano il pane, è presente un tavolo con sedie.

  IL CASTELLO According to a legend, the building of the Castle started in 1272 after the Fornoli castle, on the opposite northern hill, was destroyed.
"Il Castello" was built on a hill 420 metres high which is 2 km from Roccastrada. The castle has a beautiful view on the whole valley below as far as the sea. It was built with "trachyte", a typical volcanic stone which was used to build villages, monasteries and castles in that area.
During World war II, it was seriously damaged. Ms Jolanda's father (Jolanda is the owner of the two flats that can be rented) bought it and began the hard and long task of refurbishing it.
When he died the castle was inherited by his 6 children, who live there at the moment. Jolanda and her husband kept a small two-room flat for themselves which they do not always use. They prefer the guests to stay in the bigger flats as they can make them enjoy better the castle atmosphere!

La Castellana Once you have gone through the arch at the castle entrance and walked a few steps further on uphill, along the terracotta tiles paved square, you will see the entrance to the bigger flat on your left.
This flat has got a large living room with an American kitchen, a sofa bed and a large fireplace (so large that you can sit under the hood, next to the fire, without getting burnt). On the left of the room there are still the original, intact, Medieval loopholes from which soldiers used to defend the entrance to the castle. Another defence loophole is along the corridor - to the right of the living room - leading to the night area and the bathroom with a shower. Also the bathroom has got another "piece of history", in fact, Ms Jolanda's son, during the refurbishing works, found an ancient wash basin carved in the stone and decided that it could be left there and used. In the night area there is a double bedroom and a small bedroom with twin beds. Each room has got a French door (with a mosquito net) opening into the castle square.
"La Castellana" guests can also have breakfast in the open air, as, near the old oven - where many years ago Jolanda and her mother used to bake the bread - there is a table with some chairs.

IL CASTELLO Der Ursprung dieser Burg geht nach der Legende auf das Jahr 1272 zurück, wonach sie nach der Zerstörung der Burg von Fornoli auf dem im Norden davor liegenden Hügel gebaut worden wäre.
Die Burg liegt 420 m über dem Meer 2 km von Roccastrada entfernt. Von der Burg aus kann man über die ganze Tiefebene bis zum Meer sehen. Der Stein, mit dem die Burg gebaut worden ist, nennt sich Trachyt. Dieses typische Vulkangestein wurde in der Gegend häufig verwendet, um die kleinen Dörfer, Klöster und Burgen zu bauen.
Während des zweiten Weltkriegs wurde die Burg schwer beschädigt. Iolandas Vater (die Besitzerin der zwei zu vermietenden Wohnungen) kaufte die Burg und begann mit den harten und langen Restaurierungsarbeiten. Nach dem Tod von Iolandas Vater erbten seine 6 Kinder die Burg, die auch heute noch dort wohnen. Iolanda und ihr Mann haben für sich selbst eine Zweizimmerwohnung reserviert, die sie aber nicht immer bewohnen. Die größeren Wohnungen gehören den Gästen, in denen diese das Wohngefühl in einer Burg voll genießen können.

La Castellana Einmal unter dem Torbogen des Burgeingangs hindurch und ein paar Schritte den gepflasterten Hof hinauf, sieht man links den Eingang der größeren Wohnung. Sie verfügt über ein großes Wohnzimmer mit offener Küche, einem Schlafsofa und einem großen Kamin (so groß, dass man unter dem Rauchfang stehen kann, ohne sich zu verbrennen). Links vom Wohnzimmer sind die Schießscharten erhalten geblieben, von denen aus die Soldaten im Mittelalter das Burgtor verteidigten. Eine andere Schießscharte befindet sich im Flur, rechts vom Wohnzimmer, der in den Schlafbereich und ins Bad mit Dusche führt. Auch im Bad findet sich ein Stück Geschichte: Ilolandas Sohn fand während der Restaurierungsarbeiten ein aus Stein gemeißeltes Waschbecken und beschloss es wieder zu verwenden. Der Schlafbereich besteht aus einem Doppelbettzimmer und einem Zweibettzimmer. Jedes Zimmer hat eine Fenstertür mit Insektengitter in Richtung des Burghofs.
Die Gäste von "La Castellana" haben die Möglichkeit im Freien zu Frühstücken: Neben dem alten Ofen, wo vor langen Zeit Frau Iolanda und Ihre Mutter das Brot backten, steht ein Tisch mit Stühlen.
